Vienna's lifeball is a surprising success story. It was started in 1993 in Vienna as an AIDS charity event and quickly became the biggest, most color- and successful event of its sort throughout Europe. The ball's aim is rather obvious: fund raising to support various AIDS related activities from preventation to counselling and direct aid to HIV positive people. But lifeball is more than mere fund raising. It is a statement for life in all its aspects. It is one hell of a party.Dramatic fashion shows with drag queens on top of the catwalk are usually a vital part of the program. So are guest appearances by stars like Elton John, Marla Glen or celebs like Arabella Kiesbauer or Nena. Like Regenbogenparade (rainbowparade) the lifeball has become a symbol of an open and tolerant society. It takes place in Vienna's city hall.
