Vienna's lifeball is a surprising success story. It was started
in 1993 in Vienna as an AIDS charity event and quickly became
the biggest, most color- and successful event of its sort throughout
Europe.
The ball's aim is rather obvious: fund raising to support various
AIDS related activities from preventation to counselling and
direct aid to HIV positive people. But lifeball is more than
mere fund raising. It is a statement for life in all its aspects.
It is one hell of a party.
Dramatic fashion shows with drag queens on top of the catwalk
are usually a vital part of the program. So are guest appearances
by stars like Elton John, Marla Glen or celebs like Arabella
Kiesbauer or Nena. Like Regenbogenparade (rainbowparade) the
lifeball has become a symbol of an open and tolerant society.
It takes place in Vienna's city hall.
Famous fashion designers Vivian Westwood and Christian
Lacroix have exclusively designed to Barbie dolls for the
Viennese lifeball.
